CPS System - Classroom Performance System

Okay, I got enough comments and questions about the CPS system that I decided to write a post about it. CPS stands for Classroom Performance System and it does many things. Basically it is a wireless student response system. Each student has a cute little blue "clicker" with the response options on it. You can do MANY things. You can ask a verbal question and have students respond. IMMEDIATELY you see how many students got the answer correctly. Later you can see exactly who got it wrong. In the CPS software, you can type multiple choice questions and post them and students can answer them. This can be done for a quiz, or for practice. Also, you can give students PRINTED questions and they answer them with the "clicker." They can work at their own pace, because the screen would have their clicker number along with the question number they are currently responding to.

Unfortunately, I have not used this system to its full advantage, because like everything else, there is a learning curve.

The best thing is that it gives either the students or you (if it is a quiz/test) IMMEDIATE feedback. You don't have to go run the scantrons through the machine, you can tell the students their score before the end of class. :)

Also, one classroom set could be purchased and shared among several teachers. It is easily transferable from classroom to classroom. It connects to your computer, and if your computer is hooked up to a television, the screen would be on the TV. If you have a projector in your room, it would go through the projector to show on a larger screen.

This is what the CPS website has to say about using it in a K-12 classroom:

Do you take work home to grade? You don't have to...

Do your students love coming to class? They could…

Do you know how each student is performing on the state standards? You could…

eInstruction’s Classroom Performance System (CPS) moves seamlessly into the K-12 classroom with innumerable benefits to students and instructors. eInstruction’s hand held response pad technology appeals directly to a new generation of learners, while the ease and aid in data collection appeals directly to a new generation of teachers. CPS is interactive, fun, and highly productive!

Simply pose a question verbally or create ahead of time using one of eInstruction’s 57 question templates and wait a few seconds while each student enters an answer on his or her individual response pad. Every student is involved. No one is embarrassed or shy about giving an answer. They’re having fun and behind the scenes CPS is correlating all the results, freeing the teacher to teach. Use the technology in your classroom one time and your students will ask for more!

Does it play the theme song from Jeopardy when the students use it to answer a question? lol It sounds like the same software program that many polling companies use to poll its attendees. I used something very similiar at Disney to provide the answer to questions when they had this polling place at Epcot. It sounds like your classroom is on the cutting edge with using new technololgy. I am impressed and jealous. I hope that once I get in the tech position that I can start investing in using technology that makes other schools drewl.

I actually attended a session at the conference that used Clickers. It was very interesting and I did like the immediate feedback. Since 'active learning' is a best practice in education, the CPS system will really change the traditional lecture. :O)
